After 3 1/2 years in the creative process and nearly a year in construction, Butterfly Haven is almost ready to open! In retrospect, while the project has involved much work and angst, we have enjoyed great support from many wonderful people including...family and friends-both here and in States, contractors and workmen, and even the support from local government agencies. Thank you all!

Please enjoy a time-lapse collection of photos:

Here is the very beginning of construction-the laying out of the entrance building. You can see a few collected butterfly plants in pots in the background.

Speaking of plants, many days were spent with consultants out in the nurseries and woods finding the right plants for butterflies. Here is Alex.

Visitor bathrooms and a new septic system had to be built.

Fantastic idea - we can't wait until you open. Will you be selling or telling us which "butterfly friendly" plants to plant?

Roberto,
Great question and thank you for posting! Perhaps I should add a page to my website or have an information sheet available at the Butterfly Haven.

Butterflies use plants in 2 different ways. The first is host plants which they lay eggs on and the larvae feed on. The second are nectar plants which the adults feed on (although some butterflies such as the fabulous blue morpho, feed on ripe fruit) Good nectar plants are lantana, zinnia, and cosmos.

Things get complicated when it comes to host plants because butterflies use a very diverse collection of plants and most butterflies only host on 2-3 plants. Do you have any favorite butterflies that you would like to encourage?

FYI-I have an overstock of some plants and I will be selling them at reasonable prices. If visitors support this, I will likely continue because I love the idea of people creating their own refuges. It is sorely needed.

Lovely, lovely, lovely promotional video. So glad to learn someone is doing this. And thanks for the shots of the glass winged butterfly, I didn't know such an insect existed! Gorgeous! Best of luck with all. I'm going to make a point of visiting.
